History of the Mercedes 300SL Roadster

The Mercedes-Benz SL-class is a grand tourer built since 1954 by Mercedes-Benz. The designation SL is derived from the German Sport Leicht (Sport Lightweight) and was first applied to the epic 300SL, also called the ' Gullwing ', because of the upward opening wing doors. The model was mainly used for racing in the early years, but has changed considerably over the years. The car changed from a real sports car to a sporty convertible. In Addition To The SL Coupé, a cabriolet version was also produced from 1958, the Roadster. This gave the SL an even more sporty character. The body of the 300 SL Roadster is a wonderful example of handmade beauty. Nice to look at and great to ride in. With its stylistic features such as the low bonnet, the parallel aerodynamic curves, the horizontal wheel cockpit widens hitting the wheels and the ' gills ' in the front screens. In later years there was also a rarer variation on the market: the hardtop version. Where the designers managed to preserve the exceptionally beautiful lines.

The Roadster also proved much more pleasant to ride in practice, because it did not have the heat development that the Gullwing played.
From 1958 to 1963 there are a total of 1,848 ' Roadsters ' built. The Mercedes-Benz 300SL is today the most coveted Mercedes-Benz and one of the biggest icons in automotive history.
